Clematis This beautiful clematis ‘niobe’ is creeping along the stonework of Bodnant Garden. As so often, I set off with one picture in mind and different aspects of it fascinate me as the painting develops – in this case it was the euphorbia (which took ages) and the lichen. Apparently it takes a lichen 25 years to grow an inch in diameter – good going lichens. Giclee print 29 x 40 cm

Sunlight in the Dell When I was talking to an art group I was told these rays of light are called ‘fingers of God’, in the USA at a lecture I was giving there I was told they are ‘Angels Ladders’. Both good names I thought, and a fantastic sight to paint, particularly in as pretty a place as the Dell at Bodnant Garden. It was definitely a case of being in the right place at the right time ! Autumn Colours at Bodnant Garden. This is one of the gorgeous displays Bodnant puts on every autumn. I enjoyed painting this scene because the Artemisia was dying back and I like things that aren’t perfect. I like painting mud and rust and flaking paintwork as well as I feel that it is all part of the ’reality’ of a scene. Giclee print 28cm x 40cm

Autumn Maples. These gorgeous trees are in Church wood, Bodnant Garden, the National Trust Garden, Conwy Valley, N.Wales, where we have had a gallery since 2004 (find out more about the Bodnant gallery).This was a particularly lovely year to paint them I thought because the colours, for whatever reason, were staggered and so some trees were still green where others were completely clothed in their ‘Saturday night’ finery.
